Son is Father of Man!!

Why is Arjun dearer to Krishna than even his own wives and children?
.
We have seen in parts that Friendship is paramount. Krishna chose Arjuna’s relationship as his most defining relationship, as his closest relationship above those of his blood and familial ties.
.
The Children of Krishna will love Krishna regardless, he is their father. They love him not because he is a great warrior or a Darshanika or a philosopher, he is still their father. The wives of Krishna will love Krishna regardless, he is their husband, hormonal and societal bonds insist on that. You cannot choose your family or who you fall in love with. You will love them regardless of many qualities.
.
Only ones I would say, who did not have that compunction to love Krishna were Saivya and Kalindi.
.
Saivya hated Krishna and wanted to murder him and over time that hate turned to love and that again is a great insight into human condition that Epics give us. This is an exploration of love hate boundary by the poet in its sublime grace.
.
Krishna would love his children anyway because they are his children and as a father, he would love them anyway.
.
He would love both his fathers and his mothers equally because they are his own and he would love them anyway!

.
Father and mother will love Krishna come what may. They would love Krishna as much as any of the other sons they sacrificed to make sure Krishna was born. They did not love Krishna any more than any of their other sons.
.
A man has three types of relationships. He has family, he has loves aka his wife and his children and he has friends.
.
A person cannot choose the family. That is inborn. That is destiny. You will love your family regardless of the family you were born into. Krishna was lucky that he got the love of two fathers and two mothers. But Vasudeva would love Krishna as much as he would love Gada, or Balarama or Keshi or Kapila or Kirtiman. Vasudeva would love and mourn his lost ten sons equally as much as he would love Krishna.
Maybe he would love them a little more!
Devaki would definitely love the lost ones more than Krishna!
.
There is a Punjabi saying, Ma javandi sat par karm na dendi vand.
.
Mother can give birth to seven children but she cannot give them her destiny! A mother would always love the one who is left behind, who is ill, who is handicapped and who was brutally snatched from her hands more than the successful sons! That is just human nature.

Read:
Dhritarashtra Son or Diseases?

They sacrificed a lot for him. But Vasudeva and Devaki would love Krishna because he is their child, not because he is the chosen one or he is supreme god himself.
.
Yashoda loved Krishna as her own son. She did not know till later that Krishna was not her son, She loved him nonetheless!
She may be a surrogate mother here but her love for her son is no less than that of Devaki and eventually her pain for the separation will be higher still. When they talked of recent Surrogacy bill and its ramifications, I only see the images of Yashoda and Devaki.

What would Yashoda and Devaki do?
And when the society makes women of caliber of Yashoda and Devaki, we may not need that surrogacy bill but meantime, it is what the society is dependent (dharana) on.
.
.
And there was one person who was probably as important as Arjuna in Krishna’s life.
Nanda!
.
If there was one relationship in Krishna’s life and one person who loved Krishna more than Krishna loved Arjuna, that was Nanda!
.
Yashoda did not know Nandlala was not her son. Nanda did. Her love was that of the mother.
.

nanda-b

Nanda adopted Krishna as his own! He knew who was Krishna going in to the relationship.
.
The Biggest Most powerful entity in the Universe and You are making that entity into a little baby! With that little baby’s understanding, all the anger of a little baby (ask putna and trnavrata), all the angst of the little baby (ask yamalarjuna) and the immaturity of the little baby (ask the happy potters whose trade picked up once he could shoot gulela!!)….
This is like a ticking nuclear weapon you put into a nursery, one who can destroy the entire universe in an angry thought and you put that in the lap of Nanda.
.
Nanda who loved Krishna more than his own daughter he would give away so that he would hold tight to his chest the firebrand that can burn the entire universe!!
.
.
Nanda chose the open ticking time bomb that the most supreme power of the universe is as a child! With child’s complaints, child’s maturity and had the most difficult task of humanizing the avatar!
.
Someone to tell the little boy that only thing you should stick in your ear is your elbow!
.
Nanda would be divining rod to create the Greatest Human Avatar of the Lord. If Radha is the SHakti and Arjuna the energy, Nanda was the regulator on that power.
.
We have seen elsewhere that Sons of Dharma always come paired with sons of Vayu. Well they are needed as energy regulators as unregulated power packs like Prabhanjana can destroy the universe! And thus, sons of Dharma or Dharma are needed for the avatars of Sattvika gunas of Purush himself.
.
Yup! Nanda. Nanda was avatar of Drona Vasu, he was older brother or nephew of Bheeshma.
.
The seven older brothers of Bheeshma were enclosed in the cocoon of Ganga, their own mother. No one dies in the embrace of the mother.
That is very clearly identified in Mahabharata. These seven sons of Santanu had different destinies. The later ruling dynasties of Gangas in Kolar and Talakadu and Pujri who ruled more than 1500 plus years are descended from them. The name of this dynasty is preserved in KonguNadu centered on Coimbatore. This family encouraged women administrators and is probably only Indian dynasty to have hereditary succession of three female Prime Ministers!! We have the famous Trishashtilakshana Mahapurana as well as Adipurana, Uttarapurana and Ganga Harivamsa in the books.

The character of Parsaurama that is popular in modern India is from one of their books Samara Parasurama!! And they built the Jagannatha and Ratha Yatra of it.
.
In the lower caste Puranas, Ganga Purana, Nishada Purana and Malla Purana, it is identified that all eight sons of Gangas had destinies to fulfill and not only Bheeshma. One of them is the son-in-law of Mahishmati Duryodhana and also the teacher who comes to teach Draupadi as she describes in the vana Parva. Another famous one is Rsi Vayu and he is found in sculptures from Prambana, Sambisari to Angkor Wat.
.
We will come to that later in the narrative.
.
And again, please focus. Drona Vasu is Nanda is representative of Dhara Vasu. The husband of Dharaa. The earth. Dhara is who Dharanas! One who has infinite patience of earth. Dhara who is Dharma himself. Equal to Dharma. The Father of Narayana.
.
Vasus are sons of Dharma!! Dharma again comes into picture here. Vasus would know best how to handle their own brother Narayana!
.
Actually just as Nara and Narayana are two parts of same Purusa and Paurusha of that Purusha, the Eight Vasus came to earth as two split avatars as well. The eight sons of Ganga and Santanu. And eight sons of Vasudeva and Sahadevaa. Pravara and Sruta are the famous ones in this set. Udhhava is another Vasu reborn.
.
Third side of the coin: Prabhupada interpreted the slokas of Mahbharata to indicate that Ganga gave birth to one son only the Ashtha Vasu (Eighth vasu rather than eight vasus) while others were born elsewhere and later bad translators converted Eighth Vasu to Eight Vasus and had Ganga float the other seven away!!
.
..
Anyway, that is not the focus of our narrative.
.
Nanda was there for a long long time. Jaya Gods may have been cursed to be born seven times but Nanda had been there EIGHT times.
.
Nanda was in training for eight births to become the father, the shining beacon that will guide the supreme power of universe to the realm of humanity! Nanda had sacrificed not one but eight births to that.
.
Nanda came first as Srikara. And as Srikara, against the whole world, against the whole wide world, he stood alone. He stood for justice and truth.
Srikara stood alone to fight.
.
And when he stood alone to fight, wherever someone stands alone to fight! Whenever someone stands alone for truth and justice, God comes to their side.
.
When Srikara stood alone against the forces of the world’s tyranny, Hanuman came and stood with him.
He was Akela and we know Hanuman loves Kelas! And Srikara was no longer Akela!
.
That is another important point here. Narayana himself is not alone!! He is never Akela!! He comes with Nara. And he comes with other Jaya gods.
.
“Behind every success story in sport, there is a solid, dependable, committed core group.’
.
‘Behind every success story in Avatar, there is a solid, dependable, committed core group.!!
.
He is never alone. There is an alternate, there is another. He always have somone supporting him. That is Nara! And that is why the first shloka of Mahabharata is a benediction to both Nara and Narayana. Let them bless this book as we are about to read it.
.
नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम्।देवीं सरस्वतीं व्यासं ततो जयमुदीरयेत्॥
Oh! reader or listener (implied), first bow down to Narayan, Nara, the best of men, goddess Sarasvati, and Vyas, and then glorify Mahabharata.
.
.
TEAM, WE Rather than I are equally important to Avatar and success of that Avatar.
.
Each avatar came with a Team around him! There is a reason for that.

P.S. Dads of Avatars Preview of series
I will convert this section to separate article to talk about the parents chosen for the Avatars in their human forms. Jamadagni, Dasaratha and Nanda. (Even Vasudeva and Shudhodhana).
We need to explore the history of Jamdagni in detail (already started going down that rabbit hole in https://www.facebook.com/…/30530…/permalink/593544957485497/)
.
Dasaratha and his adventures will star in Timidhwaja Samabara series (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=695947410558889&id=259035577583410 and continuing..)
.
Srikara had stood against the tyrants of the world alone and he was the one who hid and raised the Avatar against the tyranny of Kamsa and Jarasandha.
.
Nanda was not fazed by the threats of Kamsa and his ilk, he had been battling tyrants for Eight births! To each, tyrant he would simply state as Ghalib did:

haiN aur bhee duniya meiN Zaalim Tere Jaise
kehte haiN ki ‘Nanda’ ka hai andaaz-e-bayaaN aur hi kuchh

daam har mauj mein hai halqaa-e-sad_kaam-e-nahang
dekhein kya guzre hai qatre pe gauhar hone tak

aashiqi sabr-talab aur tamanna betaab
dil ka kya rang karoon khoon-e-jigar hone tak

Awadhi mein kahenge
Chal be bahut dekhe tere jaisey!!
.
..
And Nanda prepared for that for Eight births. He was Srikara when he stood to defend the temple of Mahadeva alone against the forces of the entire world!
As he had stood alone against the tyranny of the entire world, Hanuman came and stood with him! Because God stands with those who stand for justice.
Because Srikara stood against tyranny then he stood against tyranny of Kamsa now! As Drona vasu, he gave up the throne of Hastinapur much before Bheeshma did and chose to be a cowherd. A common man! A common man to humanize the most uncommon avatar of the most powerful being in the world!
.
And he had waited for so long for this child to come: (in words of Mir Hasan Mir)
mere maula aao ke muddat hui hai
sitam zaalimo ke uthaate uthaate
tere dushmano ki guzarti hai maula
tere doston ko sataate sataate

guzarti hai jaisi guzaarenge maula
na haari hai himmat na haarenge maula
sitam thak gaya hai hue kund khanjar
lahoo bandoein ke bahaate bahaate
mere maula aao…

His love for child, the God who bears his name (nandlala nandgopala), who bears his profession (gopala, govinda), cannot be measured!!
And no wonder, the other relationship highlighted is in the name Parthasarthy!!
.
….

Thank you so much Pranshu sir for the wonderful series post.

Great series on the Arjuna and Krishna’s friendship.

Well said, friendship is the Paramount!!!

Specially this part is the best, I have never read friendship between Nanda and Krishna – Except once when Krishna defeated Varuna for capturing Nanda.

    Thanks for sharing beautiful articles.
